Hair-loss Drugs’ Big Growth In China

A Look Back at the Crisis

Treatments such as Mercks ( MRK ) Propecia and Johnson & Johnsons ( JNJ ) Rogaine are gaining ground in China, where a full head of hair is a sign of health and virility. Sales of Western hair-loss treatments, most of which contain Rogaines active ingredient, minoxidil, jumped 90percent to 100.7million yuan ($16.4million) in the five years through 2012, according to researcher Euromonitor International. Thats almost double the growth rate of Chinas broader 33.6billion yuan market for hair-care products. Hair-loss drug sales are still small because baldness is only now being seen as a problem requiring pharmaceutical help, and Western companies have only recently begun to seize on the concern. Chinas hair-loss treatment market is still in the development stage, and patients have many misconceptions about the treatments available, Jane Wu, Mercks communications director for China, said via e-mail. The drugmaker started a program with the China Association of Health Promotion and Education, a government-supervised body, two years ago to promote the use of doctor-prescribed hair-loss treatments. When we started our hair-loss clinic in 2000, we probably saw three patients a day, and now I get about 30, says Yang Shuxia, a dermatologist at the Peking University First Hospital in Beijing.

Hair loss

Older women face the problem of thinning hair during the menopausal years. Men should find out if hair loss is hereditary in the family. Both men and women should also consider if they have had any illness recently, or if there is a problem of thyroid imbalance. Regular use of permanent dyes can also lead to hair loss. Beautician Shahnaz Husain says, “I am often asked, how often the hair should be washed and if washing hair regularly can lead to hair loss.

Tips to prevent hair loss

If you’re considering this option, Tsao advises, “Go to a hair transplant specialist who treats a lot of women. Talk with women who have undergone the treatment.” Several newer techniques for treating hair loss are in development, including the laser hair comb – a handheld device that emits a low-level laser light, which is supposed to stimulate new hair growth. Tsao calls it “a compelling and very possible means of regrowing hair.” However, laser combs haven’t yet been studied well enough to determine whether they’re effective. Until the results of more clinical trials are released, Tsao recommends you “save your money, but keep it in mind.” Camouflaging bald patches A number of techniques can camouflage hair loss. One is to wear a wig that matches your hair color and style. Another is to have your hairdresser cut and style your hair in a way that conceals bald patches.

Nutrition Q&a: Getting Fiber From Whole Grains

Our foods contain hundreds of various fibers some help with digestion and regularity, others improve blood fats and others help with weight control. You need all types. Dietary fiber is a nutrient found in whole grains, legumes (beans and peas), fruits and vegetables. To eat enough fiber, get it from all food sources. Most Americans get nowhere close to the 25 grams per day recommended for adults. No surprise! We dont eat nearly enough fruit, vegetables, legumes and, yes, whole grains with fiber.

Hormone Therapy May Pose Higher Cancer Risk In Some Women

Manning wants hormone therapy in prison. Will it happen?

The findings led to fewer hormone prescriptions for postmenopausal women, and a concurrent decrease in breast-cancer incidence shortly thereafter, which has been attributed to the reduced use of HRT, the researchers said. In the new study, in line with the previous findings , there was an overall link between HRT use and a higher rate of breast cancer. On average, 578 in 10,000 women who used HRT developed breast cancer, compared with 546 in 10,000 women who didn’t use HRT. The study has some limitations, the researchers said.

Cancer Cells

I dont know of any cases that have been brought yet against military prisons. But they would have the same obligation to provide adequate medical care. Levi worked with a North Carolina inmate to reform federal policy on hormone replacement therapy in prison. Vanessa Adams entered a North Carolina facility at age 29. She was biologically male but self-identified as female throughout her adult life, according to court documents.

Hormone Therapy Linked to Higher Breast Cancer Death Risk

VIDEO: Breastfeeding May Prevent Breast Cancer

null “It is early in the follow-up and the number of breast cancer deaths will certainly substantially increase as we move forward,” said Dr. Rowan Chlebowski, professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, and lead author of the study. Women in the study who used estrogen and progestin for five-and-a-half years — which is considered long-term use of the therapy — were at higher risk of getting breast cancer, said Chlebowksi. Earlier results of this trial indicated a connection between synthetic hormone therapy — commonly marketed as as the drug Prempro — and less aggressive forms of breast cancer .

Many Sleep Disorders Can Involve Sexual Behaviors

Sexsomnia is officially recognized as a subtype of parasomnia, a group of disorders that includes sleepwalking, sleep talking and night terrors, among others. But abnormal sexual behaviors can affect people with a wide range of sleep-related disorders, according to the new report, published in the journal Sleep. Inappropriate sexual behaviors have been described in people with sleep disorders as diverse as parasomnias, severe insomnia and restless legs syndrome. In some cases, the sexual behaviors are not sexsomnia, but occur during waking hours, explained Dr. Carlos H.

Exercise Improves Sleep, But It Takes Time to Reap the Benefits

The exercisers also reported improvements to their moods and to their quality of life. For the current study, researchers looked closely at this data, this time to see how quickly exercisers saw improvements to their sleep. They wanted to know whether individual daytime exercise sessions led to better sleep later that same night. They also investigated what impact sleep had on exercise the following day. Their analysis revealed that though exercise did have a significant positive impact on sleep, its effects were not immediate: Individual exercise sessions did not have an immediate effect on sleep. Researchers found no improvements to sleep from exercise on a day-to-day basis. As far as two months into the 16-week study period, the exercising group had experienced no significant improvements to their sleep.

When Your Partner Has a Sleep Disorder

Learn more about sleep. If you’re concerned about having trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or sleeping too much, assess your risk for a sleep disorder. It’s unfortunate you’re not functioning at your best today. You say you had a good quantity of sleep last night, but maybe the quality of your sleep is not as good as it could be? Having a good sleep routine including a consistent bedtime and wake time often is the key to getting the quality sleep night after night that your body needs for optimal health. Since you usually sleep longer, if you often aren’t feeling your best, you should consider talking to your doctor.

Breast Really Is Best: Mothers’ Milk Fills A Child’s Digestive System With Essential ‘good’ Bacteria

Good bacteria from the milk of breast-feeding mums can protect the digestive and immune system health of her baby, say scientists

Number of children dying from heart defects has fallen by more than 80% in the last 30 years ‘A healthy community of bacteria in the gut of both mother and baby is really important for baby’s gut health and immune system development. ‘We’re not sure of the route the bacteria takes from gut to breast milk but, we have used culture, isolation, sequencing and fingerprinting methods to confirm that they are definitely the same strains.’ The findings are published in the latest issue of the journal Environmental Microbiology. DNA tests were carried out on the breast milk of seven healthy mothers and their exclusively breast-fed babies who were up to one month old. The scientists tested faecal samples to identify bacteria in the guts of both infants and their mothers. Breast beats the bottle again: Previous research has shown breast milk protects babies against stomach bugs, chest infections, asthma and allergies The researchers wrote: ‘This study shows that gut-associated anaerobes may be vertically transferred from mother to neonate (infant) via breastfeeding. ‘Our data supports the recently suggested hypothesis of a novel way of mother-neonate communication, in which maternal gut bacteria reach breast milk via an entero-mammary pathway to influence neonatal gut colonisation and maturation of the immune system.’ Japanese research published earlier this month found that breastfeeding can halve the risk of children being obese by the age of eight.

Treat digestive problems naturally

Bechtold adds that the fiber in produce has an added benefit of regulating bowel movements. BEST: Whole Grains Whole grain foods, including brown rice and wheat, also contain lots of fiber, making them another top food group good for digestion, King says. (Obviously this advice may not apply for people with chronic conditions like celiac disease or other gluten sensitivities, since wheat contains gluten.) BEST: Bananas While all fruits and vegetables are generally good for digestion, bananas in particular are great because they don’t irritate the stomach. That’s why they’re part of the “BRAT Diet” for vomiting or diarrhea — that is, the bananas, rice, applesauce and dry toast diet. “Those are the four things that tend to be the easiest tolerated amongst people and they tend to be bland, so they won’t irritate the stomach like other foods,” King says.

Those suffering from irritable bowel syndrome and intestinal infections can benefit from infusions of lemon, basil, ginger, peppermint and chamomile. Simply steep for 10 minutes in hot water, strain and drink at least twice a day, generally an hour after meals. If your problem is a chronic one, you might have to take a supplement comprising the herbs triphala and guggul twice a day, apart from a herbal infusion. Candida in the digestive tract: Candidiasis, if left unchecked, can play havoc with your digestion.

Beauty Ambivalence: Why We Take Sides

My pain threshold is quite high and I am quietly confident that pain won’t be a problem. I am proved right. Downtime No coloured foods for 48 hours, as teeth are susceptible to staining post-treatment. So steer clear of tomato sauce, berries, coffee, red wine and tea. The list of pale things you can ingest does include “sauvignon blanc”; love it.

Jessica needs to throw away the wet gel and hide the straightening iron. We would have loved to see her cute bob blown out with a large barrel round brush to give it some volume. To create the voluminous blowout at home, apply a protecting heat-styling product like Redken Satinwear 02 Ultimate Blow-Dry Lotion to damp hair. Then starting with the front, dry hair in sections, curling under, blowing out until smooth. Once hair is blown out, curl the ends under with the large barrel brush and blast with hot air and then cool air to set.

Beauty and the Berkshires

“Did she or didn’t she?” the public asked, questioning whether Judd had undergone cosmetic surgery. I wrote about the topic, describing her experience as the Beauty Paradox; care about your looks and you’re judged as superficial, don’t care and you’re viewed as neglecting yourself. The last thing we need is other people criticizing how that delicate balance is struck. Then there’s the female dental assistant who was fired by her boss, James Knight, because he found her too attractive. The Iowa Supreme court condoned his action, saying it was not motivated by gender discrimination and he therefore had a right to let her go. Apparently, there was a fragile marriage and a jealous wife behind the whole case, but in the end, it was this this woman’s good looks that led to her unemployment. You may wonder how anyone can be legitimately fired over their appearance.

Diabetes Medication Alogliptin Did Not Raise Risk Level For Patients With Acute Coronary Syndrome

Common side effects include stuffy or runny nose, as well as headache or cold symptoms. These are typically mild. “Always check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any additional medications while taking alogliptin, he said. While the investigation satisfied FDA requirements proving cardiovascular safety, the research did not find that alogliptin had any heart benefits. The authors noted that no diabetes medication has of yet been identified as beneficial to the heart. “The findings could guide clinicians to choose among the many antidiabetic agents available when treating patients with type 2 diabetes and very high cardiovascular risk,” Dr.

Diabetes medication saxagliptin may not raise heart attack risk but heart failure patients are warned

The researchers also observed that patients taking saxagliptin were more likely to achieve an average blood sugar level that is considered normal (measured as a glycated hemoglobin level that is less than 7 percent) at the end of treatment. An increased number of patients in this study, however, also reported at least one hypoglycemic event (a low blood sugar level) in the treatment group when compared with placebo (15.3 versus 13.4 percent). The most common side effects observed with Onglyza (saxagliptin) are upper respiratory tract infection, urinary tract infection and headache. Other side effects include allergic-like skin reactions such as rash and hives. In a statement, study chairman Eugene Braunwald, MD, of the TIMI Study Group, Cardiovascular Division, Brigham and Womens Hospital and Harvard Medical School, warned, Our data also show an increase in hospitalization for heart failure in patients who received saxagliptin, which was not expected and deserves further study. Dr. Bhatt hopes that these findings will help to guide physicians and improve their ability to prescribe different diabetes medications in a more evidence-based and data-driven way. Few diabetes drugs have been studied as thoroughly as saxagliptin, and this outcome trial raises the bar for evaluating the safety of all diabetes drugs, said Dr.
